“Purpose for the Desert”
So many people have their hardest, driest, and loneliest spiritual season during the summer. Pastorally, we see people run to sin for comfort, try to escape from responsibilities, and isolate themselves from community. In the summer, people tend to question everything from, “What should I do with my life?” to, “Is God real?”.
As we head into the summer, we as elders have already been dealing with this pattern in our church community. As we’ve been praying about how we can serve and pastor our community through the summer months, we were reminded that God has a purpose for wilderness seasons. So we want to embrace it and ask God what He wants to teach us in the desert.
While prayerfully asking God these questions, this verse dropped into our hearts and we have built a schedule and plan for the summer around this verse.
“And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.”
Whether you see it or not, God has purpose for the desert season. Our prayer is that God will use this summer to remind us that He is leading us, humbling us, testing us, and exposing our hearts. So instead of fighting God’s plan, let’s submit to it, learn from it, and obey Him.
We have organized 8 weeks of classes, disciplines, practices, prayer times, and serving opportunities. We challenge all of you to participate in as much as possible. Our hope is that you use to participate in as much as possible. Our hope is that you use this as a guide for the summer.
